LA Tops Energy Star Buildings List

Six metropolitan areas in the Pacific Southwest region made EPA’s 2010 list of U.S. metropolitan areas with the largest number of energy-efficient buildings that have earned EPA’s Energy Star® designation.

Topping the national list is Los Angeles, ranking number one with 510 buildings, San Francisco was third with 248, Sacramento was eighth with 168, Phoenix was 17th with 98 buildings, San Diego was 20th, and San Jose came in 22nd with 69.

“When it’s more important than ever to cut energy costs and reduce pollution in our communities, organizations across America are making their buildings more efficient, raising the bar in energy efficiency and lowering the amount of carbon pollution and other emissions in the air we breathe,” said EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson.

The Energy Star label is well-known for home appliances, electronics, and other products that meet strict EPA performance levels for energy efficiency. The good news is that the buildings where we work, shop, and learn can also earn EPA’s Energy Star label, according to EPA.

Others topping the list of 25 cities are Washington, D.C., which was second; Chicago came in fourth; fifth was New York; Atlanta was sixth; Houston came in seventh; Detroit was ninth; and Dallas-Fort Worth was ranked tenth.
